Behold, the latest JUDGE’S CORNER post, in which one of our awesome Judges discusses the difference a viewing angle can make. Hint: a lot.
Have you ever noticed where the judges sit during a meet? We try to place ourselves in the best position to see as much of the routine directly in front of us as possible. And there is a good reason for that. Things can look very different when viewed from different angles.
As an experiment, sit on one end of your sofa and ask your gymnast to perform a handstand or a split jump directly in front of you. Next move to the other end of the sofa, but your gymnast doesn’t move. Have them perform again. Notice a difference? Even when judges are sitting three feet away from each other, they have a different view of the skill being performed.
For a final test, move to stand directly in front of your gymnast and have them do their handstand or split jump one last time. This angle is completely different from the first two!
Why is this important? Sometimes judges don’t agree on what they saw. And that’s OK! You are getting multiple opinions. This experiment gives you some idea of why judges don’t always agree. This is also important to remember when videoing your gymnast. The angle from your camera will most likely not match the angle the live judges have. This is one reason why your meetcritique may have some different deductions than in a live meet.
