meetcritique FAQ

What's a meetcritique?

A meetcritique is a video you upload to our system that is then annotated in real-time by a certified USAG judge. You can see exactly where deductions and bonuses are applied to help you make sense of what can be a complex and fast moving sport. We offer meetcritiques for USAG men's, women's and Trampoline and Tumbling.

How long will it take to get my meetcritique back?

As a great songwriter once said, these things take time. Please know that most judges will most likely be busy travelling to and from meets during seasonal weekends. Our goal is to have videos back to you within 1-3 days. meetcritiques are judged in the order received** - and keep in mind the queue can get quite long on a meet weekend. Also note that on meet weekends the clock can START Monday morning when judges make their way back home!

** Unless you take advantage of our new FAST TRACK pass - which is only available as part of our 40-pack. With FAST TRACK, every event you submit goes to the top 10% of the queue!

Which level routines can be judged?

While meetcritiques are available for boys in levels 3-10. For Optional Level Boys we also provide a Start Value.

For girls, we support Levels 1-10 as well as all Xcel levels.

T&T - we support all levels.

Practice routines can even be submitted - and these can be a great training tool when planning a routine, debuting a new skill, or prepping for a meet!

What's a meetcritique credit?

meetcritique uses a credit based system (1 credit = 1 meetcritique). The system makes sense for us at launch as we work to find an equitable and flexible pricing structure.

So, do you score the events like a meet?

Nope. We just want to help you and your athelete understand what goes into a score. Our judges mark and annotate deductions and bonuses in real time. So you can see that when Johnny didn't hold his handstand long enough, that was no bueno.

What if my meetcritique shows more deductions (or bonuses) than my gymnast was given credit for at his meet?

Don't sweat it. Judging gymnastics takes a trained eye and encyclopedic knowledge of rules and constantly changing scoring criteria. Judges make split second evaluations and think in terms of .1s, .3s and .5s. Our judges have the benefit of slowed down frame by frame video to make analysis. Conversely, in person judges are sitting right on top of the action and our judges can only evaluate what the video shows them. Plus (especially at the lower levels), there is an element of subjectivity that goes into every score. Different judges may look for different things. We're not trying to second guess anyone - we just want to help you to become more informed about what goes into a score and help your gymnast improve.

Does the world need more know-it-all gym parents?

Hard no. But we do feel informed parents make better gym parents. The sport can be incredibly confusing for parents who have no experience with competitive gymnastics other than watching the Olympics every 4 years. We're just trying to break down a few of the barriers to unlock a greater understanding of and appreciation for the sport.

I'm a judge - can I work for meetcritique?

Sure! We're looking for men's , women's (ESPECIALLY women's) and T&T judges at all levels. Our judges are independent contractors who work when it's convenient for them. Kind of like Uber drivers - but you get to judge routines that might be 10 seconds long instead of driving hipster millennials to the microdistillery . Drop us a line at hello@v2.meetcritique.com.

How should I film my video?

Here are a few tips:

  • Landscape mode is great for floor, beam and p-bars Portrait mode works for the more vertical events like rings, bars, and vault.
  • If you've got a newer phone that supports 60FPS - this makes for an AWESOME meetcritique and the judges can really stop the action on a crisp frame to highlight the deduction or bonus.
  • Try and keep as still as possible
  • Get as close as possible without being a distraction
  • Trim your video to be as close to "salute to salute" as possible
What if my video isn't that great?

If a judge doesn't feel like a routine can be accurately evaluated based on factors like poor video quality, an awkward angle that hides key information or the subject is too far away - the video will be returned with an explanation and you will be refunded the credit.
